Sealing wax is a fusible material that was historically used for sealing letters and other important documents. Traditionally, it is a combination of lac (a resinous substance secreted by the lac insect), various pigments, and sometimes a small amount of turpentine or another solvent. When heated, sealing wax becomes soft and malleable, allowing it to be molded over the area where two surfaces meet or where a document needs to be sealed.
In earlier times, sealing wax served not only as a method of keeping correspondence private but also as a means of authenticating documents through the unique seal imprint of an individual or institution. The practice dates back several centuries and was particularly popular during the Middle Ages up until the advent of gummed envelopes in the 19th century.
Modern sealing waxes may use different compositions, often substituting synthetic materials for natural ones, making them easier to work with and less brittle. Today, sealing wax is primarily used for decorative purposes, such as on certificates, invitations, and other special documents, adding a touch of elegance and tradition.
